Elevator Accident Kills Manhattan Resident

PENNSYLVANIA HAS A FUNNEL CLOUD, WE HAVE A VOLATILE STORM. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN? IN THE MORNING HOURS I THINK THERE MAY BE SOME RAIN, BUT NOTHING LIKE WHAT YOU ARE CATCHING OUT RIGHT THERE RIGHT NOW. LET’S GO BACK TO YOU. THANK YOU. NOW TO THE TRAGIC ELEVATOR ACCIDENT TODAY IN MANHATTAN, KILLING A MAN JUST AS HE WAS TRYING TO STEP OFF. TONIGHT, THE QUESTION, DID A SERIES OF WARNING SIGNS GO IGNORED. WE ARE LIVE IN KIPS BAY. JESSICA? Reporter: WE LIVE IN THE CITY WHERE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE USING ELEVATORS EVERY DAY. THIS STORY IS NOT ONLY EXTREMELY UNSETTLING FOR ALL OF US, BUT IT IS ALSO VERY UPSETTING FOR EVERYONE WHO KNEW THIS VICTIM AND EVERYBODY WHO LIVES IN THE BUILDING WHO BELIEVE THIS SO EASILY COULD’VE BEEN PREVENTED. A DISREGARD FOR ELEVATOR REPAIR. YOU KNOW, IT IS JUST — I AM DEVASTATED BY IT. Reporter: CHARLES IS TORN BETWEEN THE HEARTBREAK OF LOSING HIS SON, AND HIS ANGER, KNOWING IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. IT DOES NOT WORK THE WAY IT SHOULD WORK. Reporter: HE SPOKE TO US BY PHONE, HOURS AFTER HIS SON, SAM, WAS KILLED IN A FREAK ELEVATOR ACCIDENT IN HIS APARTMENT BUILDING. THE 30-YEAR-OLD WAS HEADING OUT TO WORK AT A SOFTWARE COMPANY AS THE ELEVATOR DROPPED WITHOUT WARNING, HE GOT CRUSHED BETWEEN THE ELEVATOR CAR AND A WALL. THE NEWS LEFT THE MANAGER OF THIS NEARBY PIZZERIA, WHERE SAM PURCHASED SLICES AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK, WIPING AWAY TEARS. SAD. SAD. IT IS ANOTHER HUMAN BEING WE JUST LOST. I KNOW THEY HAVE PROBLEMS IN THE ELEVATOR BEFORE, BUT I DID NOT THINK IT WAS GOING TO BE THIS SERIOUS. Reporter: IT IS WELL KNOWN IN THIS AREA, THE FDNY HAS BEEN HERE FOR ELEVATOR PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. THIS BUILDING STILL HAS AN OPEN VIOLATION FOR AN ELEVATOR ISSUE DATING BACK TO MAY. IT SHOWED PART OF THE ELEVATOR WAS TAMPERED WITH, DISABLED, AND RENDERED INOPERABLE. THE BUILDING MANAGERS WERE TICKETED. THE ISSUE WAS NEVER FULLY RESOLVED. IT IS NOT CLEAR IF THAT IS THE SAME ELEVATOR IN THURSDAY’S DEADLY INCIDENT BUT NEIGHBORS ARE FUMING, SAYING IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TAKE SOMEONE DYING TO HAVE A MANAGEMENT COMPANY REALIZE THERE IS AN ISSUE. IT HAS BEEN A CONTINUAL PROBLEM WITH THE ELEVATORS. Reporter: WHILE WE WERE TALKING TO THIS TENANT ABOUT THE ISSUES THE BUILDING SUPERINTENDENT TRIED TO PREVENT US FROM INTERVIEWING PEOPLE WHO LIVED HERE. EXCUSE ME — Reporter: WHY ARE YOU KEEPING US FROM TALKING TO PEOPLE? TELL US ABOUT THE ELEVATOR PROBLEM IN THE BUILDING. HE WALKED AWAY GIVING US NO ANSWERS. YOU CAN BET THE FAMILY WILL BE FIGHTING FOR THOSE ANSWERS AS THEY PREPARE A FUNERAL FOR THE LOVED MAN WHO LEFT THE MIDWEST TO FOLLOW HIS DREAMS IN NEW YORK? YOU WONDER HOW WE CAN GO ON, HOW WE CAN ENJOY ANYTHING IN LIFE ANYMORE, AFTER SUCH A

  1. I uses the elevator all the time in my building home. Nothing happens to me…. But I'm safe. The Elevator has not been broken (But decade ago, it broke) I feel safe all the time. 🙂

  2. Aww prayers to his family and I agree it's such an unfair way to lose his life. Elevator violations should make it mandatory it get fixed the same day! No one should have to gamble with their life on an elevator.

  3. No one cares and that's so sad
look at this Building super he is like nothing happened
Fu## u man may be next time that can be you man
    Think u dumb ass
God bless to his soul man and too his family

  4. Some rich fat cat dies in a Luxury apartment elevator accident and there is a news story. AND then we have homeless vets dying alone under bridges without any help…and NO ONE films or reports on that. You are all hypocrites.

  5. The elevator door circuit musta been jumped out. Simply put. Can’t cook with the microwave door open. Can’t run the Dyer with the door open. U close the close it makes up an electrical switch. It’s not a freak accident. Someone bypassed the door circuit. The elevator thought the door was closed an it was responding to the next car or hall call.

  6. I'm a retired elevator mechanic .
What I think happened was that building management didn't hire a reputable elevator company and did the repairs themselves in an effort to save money !!
Hence the super trying to block questions by the press !!
Now I don't know what Kind of make of elevator is involved but cutting out the pre door circuit so you can keep it running is a great big no no !!
And you can get the right part in hours in NYC !!
ANOTHER hint that they were playing with fire when they decided to go cheap on the maintenance !! 😬

  7. So sad, condolences goes out to his family at this time. Plus the Supe is an asshole for stopping that guy from speaking to the reporter.

  8. You need to charge the owners of the building with manslaughter they are the ones that made the decision not to fix the elevators. To save a few bucks. They only got find $1,300? That building makes millions of dollars of year. There is no incentive for the owners to make the building safe. The so-called Regulators just slap them on the wrist

  9. RIP to him.. 😪😓☝️🙏🤲❤his death broke my ❤heart yesterday I stayed in my apartment I didn't want to go nowhere because where I live I have to ride the elevators really high I took his death to heart ❤it made me sad I cried for him and it made me paranoid of the elevators where I live..🌏😪😪😪😪😪😪😪😪

  10. LAWSUIT !!
I'd sue the pants off that management company.
Disgusting how much it costs to live in the big rotten apple & all it would have taken to prevent this from happening us spend some $$ and maintain the elevators .
My heart goes out to the family & their loss .

  11. "accident"

It malfunctioned because it wasn't kept with maintenance. Meaning, the owners were too cheap to keep it up to date.

  12. people who live in that building shouldn't pay rent until its completely fix n safe!!!R.I.P SAM!!!🌷🌷🌷

  13. I feel sorry for the family and there son that died like this. Its sad. I bet it was the same elevator that had bad issues back in May and was never fix since. The owner knew about it and did nothing. I hope the dad sue them. When the tenants were telling the news about the building problems why that fat moron has to stop them for being interview. Go away jerk who have no reason to be there. U don't care about this poir man ur only concern about the building. Poor man l hope this building gets sue and he could rest in peace. It needs justice.

  14. Take the stairs if there's ever any kind if issue just to be safe. Come on people, if they constantly had trouble id be so scared I wouldn't put myself in that kind of danger. It's sad and it shouldn't have happened

  15. Joe: Fred I thought you tightened the bolts to the elevator
Fred: I thought you tightened the bolt for the elevator
    Joe: 😮
    Fred: 😮

  16. I wish my fat ass lived on the top floor of this bldg bc I'd lose all my weight cause I'd never be taking the elevator again

  17. 1:48 if somebody could tell me what fixture is that and that would be really appreciated to tell me the brand of the elevator…

  18. What kind of a cheap bastard owner of the property would put money savings before their tenant's safety? Well, they are in New York and New York is full of those big nose penny-pinching bastards. He probably said something like this: "What do my tenants think I am? Rich? Yeah, I got plenty of money and I am NOT going to spend thousands of dollars to fix the elevator unless they pay me more money for living in my Luxury Apartments. To hell with them. If they want the elevator fixed properly then let them fix it!"
